Writing so I can find out what I actually think.

Finn's writing site. The central question: how symbols, language, and systems shape — and limit — our cognition and sense of self. The essays start from semiotics, continental philosophy, and the technical present, and try to pry apart concepts that look self-evident — ability, freedom, growth, knowledge, action — to see where their referents actually land. Written irregularly, slowly, and at length.

  • Naming is compression. Every compression costs an experience.
  • Splicing and extending are two different operations. Most things called innovation belong to the first.
  • Empty signifiers bypass meaning and pull directly on emotion. Recognizing them is the prerequisite for immunity.
  • A subject is not declared into existence. It is trained, under real cost.
  • The line between invocation and understanding is the most important cognitive divide of this era.
  • Infrastructure moves first. People follow.
